Remarks | The Japanese "Kuwa" is a generic name, and there are currently about 10 species known. In China, in addition to fruits of "Maguwa" Morus alba, those of "Shimaguwa" M. australis and "Mōkoguwa" M. mongolica may also be mixed in marketed products. Morus alba was introduced to Japan before the Nara period (710-794) and was cultivated for sericulture. M. bombycis (Jap. name: Yamaguwa), which is native to Japan, is also cultivated for the same purpose. Japanese products are rarely sold commercially. "Sangshen" (桑椹) (Jap. name: Sōjin) has the effect of invigorating the liver and kidneys, and enriching the yin-blood. It has a nourishing effect on blood to expel wind, and when soaked in wine, it is said to be a good remedy for wind and heat. For hypotension and insomnia, the wine is recommended. | |||||
