Common usesSeeds can be used as a tonic and stomachic. Seeds are used in eye diseases, liver complaints and earache.
A paste of the pulverized seeds with lime juice is usually used for ring worm and other skin diseases.
The filtrate obtained from the boiled powder of seeds is considered a blood purifier and is given in the inflammation of skin.
Oil medicated with cakramarda seed is an effective remedy in scrofula.
Cakramarda tailam, a compound Ayurvedic oil of this herb is beneficial in eczema, ringworm and other skin diseases. It has purgative and anthelmintic properties.
Leaves are sometimes used to adulterate senna.

Chemical constituent
The seeds contain rhein, emodin, aloe-emodin, physcion, rubrofusarin and its 6-beta-gentiobioside, nor-rubrofusarin, torachrysone, 8-hydroxy-3-methyl anthroquinone-1beta-gentio-bioside, chrysophanic acid and )its 9-anthrone, obtusin, aurantio-obtusin, toralactone, sitosterol and a polysaccharide.
The seeds yield a gum (7.65%) which is the most efficient suspending agent for Calomel, Kaolin and talc. It is a binding agent for tablets also.

Pharmacological effectThe extract of seeds showed marked contraction of the uterus of guinea pig. Chrysophanic acid -9-anthrone compound, when topically applied as an ointment (100mg compound in 100g petroleum-jelly base) was found effective in curing ring worm. The methanolic extract (10%) showed good oxytocic activity.

CommentsCakramarda leaves are good for Kapha, skin diseases and Vata. It increases pitta and is good for dadru, pama (two skin conditions).

Dadrughna indicates its action against dadru, a skin condition, Drdhabija denotes the strong seed.

This is included in Urdhvabhagahara gana by Susruta.
