Quality for selectionBichengqie has rough reticulated wrinkles externally. In terms of the internal conformation, there are stone cells in the mesocarp and no palisade parenchyma. The real Bichengqie, which contains cubebin, is turned red by concentrated sulfuric acid. (B1)

RemarksIn Ayurveda, Traditional Indian Medicine, the essential oil which is derived from the fruit of Piper cubeba is applied for urologic diseases such as cystitis, gonorrhea and urethritis. The Chinese Bichengqie is produced mainly in Guangxi, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Sichuan Province. It is the mature fruit of Litsea cubeba Person of family Lauraceae (Jap. name: Taiwankuromoji). In addition, the fruits of Shimakuromoji (Litsea citrata Blume, Litsea monopetala Pres., Litsea rotundifolia Hemsl. var. oblongifolia (Nees) Alkn.) resemble it closely. They are different drugs with the same name "Bichengqie" produced in India.
