RemarksCardamom has been medicinal in ancient India and introduced to Europe as a spice. Elettaria, the genus of the original plant, is the land name of Malabar district and the species name cardamomum came from Kardia (heart) and Amomos (aroma), both of Greek words.
The commercial products are Malabar Cardamoms, Mysore Cardamoms and Mangalore Cardamoms. It is called Ela in Ayurveda of India and used as an aromatic drug for strengthening the stomach, removing wind and as a diuretic. It is applied to treat dyspepsia, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea and dry mouth.
The long shaped Cardamom, Wild Ceylon Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton var. major Thwaiter), is the fruit of wild species in Sri Lanka. It is the raw material for cardamom oil on the market.
