Description | It is a well-known drug. Abresham consists of cocoons or oval sacs which are coverings spun by a group of silk moths during metamorphosis. | ||||

Common uses | It is included in general body tonics and confections. Being expectorant mixed with other drugs in cough, asthma, catarrh and flu. It helps if the phlegm becomes more viscous or putrefied, it renders it clear. As collyrium the ash is effective against epiphora and irritation in eyes. As styptic, tonic and astringent, to check profuse menstruation. In leucorrhoea/leucorrhea and chronic diarrhoea/diarrhea it is also used as restorative tonic. | ||||

Remarks | In Unani system the silk cocoon are cut into pieces with scissors, cleaned and used under the name Abresham Muqarraz. Its bruised form is called Abresham Muharraq. It is included among sixth-three drugs which are mentioned by Avicenna (Ibn Sin) for heart ailments. According to him it is suitable for the spirit as a whole. It is heart toning simple drug. It is a good drug for high blood pressure and good for weak heart. | ||||
