Original plant nameStyrax benzoin Dryand.
Family nameStyracaceae
Used partResin, bark
Distribution areaIt is cultivated in Palembang and Tapanuli, which are located in Sumatera Island (Indonesia) at 200m altitude. In Java they grow scattered from lowland up to 1700 m altitude [201].
DescriptionBenzoin resin is a dried exudation from the pierced bark. Deep incisions are made in the trunk of the tree from which the greyish color sap exudes. When the resinous lump becomes hard and brittle, it is collected from the bark
It is produced mainly from Styrax benzoides and S. benzoin native to Sumatera, Java and Thailand.
The plant is a large shrub 2-14 m tall. Leaves alternate, evergreen simple, ovate. Flowers are pendulous, white 5-10-lobed corolla, produced 3-30 together on open or dense panicle. Fruits are oblong dry drupe, smooth with no ribs or narrow wings [207].

In Tapanuli (Sumatera), two species of Styrax were once cultivated: Styrax benzoin Dryand. and Styrax sumatrana J.J.SM.
In Palembang (Sumatera), Styrax benzoin is often called haminjon durame or kunayan batu, and Styrax sumatrana is called haminjon toba or kumayan putih. S. sumatrana produces a better quality of white and clean resin, while that of Styrax benzoin is reddish-brown.
The plants yielded 3 grades of benzoin resin : the first grade is menyan putih or menyan sodokan with white colour, the second grade is menyan sesetan or menyan itam baik and the third grade is menyan itam jahat which is dark black in colour.
Specific actionsDisinfectant, carminative, expectorant [231].
Frequency in useAbundant
Common usesIt is used in perfumes, incense, cosmetics and medicine. Incense is usually burnt in rituals. In Central Java benzoin is often used to give a specific aroma to cigarettes [201].
No written information is available about the usage of benzoin as a medicine in Indonesia.
