Distribution areaSaindhava - found in nature in extensive beds mostly associated with clay and calcium sulphate. Bida - it is available in white colour stony form in some sandy areas like Rajasthan. Romaka - is the salt produced from the Sambar lake near Ajmer, Rajasthan.
Common usesSaindhava - In small doses it is highly carminative, stomachic and digestive. It promotes appetite and assists digestion and assimilation. In large doses it is cathartic, emetic and purgative. It is given in dyspepsia and other abdominal disorders. To rouse digestion weakened by diarrhoea/diarrhea, rock salt and Yavaksara are given, in convalescence. When heated, it is used to foment painful, swollen and such other parts. Rock salt with warm water is used as an emetic. Along with other drugs, it is given in anorexia, flatulence and biliousness.

Bida is carminative, aperient, tonic and stomachic and useful in enlarged spleen and liver, flatulence, colic, dyspepsia, indigestion, bowel complaints etc.

Sauvarcala is aromatic, agreeable and digestive. It is useful in enlarged spleen, liver, flatulence, colic, dyspepsia, abdominal tumours/tumors, intestinal worms, dysentery, indigestion, bowel complaints etc. It is a dark coloured salt.

Romaka is pungent in taste, is laxative and diuretic in addition to possessing the other properties of salt. It is said to be best and purest of evaporated salts. It is used for intestinal disorders.

CommentsSaurcala is said to have sweet taste and post digestive effect. Bida lavana is said to have salty taste and sweet post digestive effect. Lavana is said to cause many diseases like varieties of visarpa (skin diseases), indralupta (alopecia) etc. On excess of use it is said to result in glani (depression), saithilya (weakness), daurbalya (debility), khalitya (baldness), palitya (graying of hair), valaya (wrinkles) etc.
