| Remarks | Hypericin causes dermatitis. Therefore, the fresh juice of Otogiriso should not be taken. In Tokushima Prefecture, Japan, the dried whole plant is shredded and soaked in liquor. It is used as preventive medicine for palsy, rheumatism, and neuralgia. The congener St. John's Wort is the aerial part of "Seiyō-Otogirisō", which is used internally for menopausal depression and neurologic excitement, and externally for incisure, neuralgia and burn injury in Europe. In Japan, "Otogirisō" is distributed as a health food, which is said to be good for relieving stress. Recently, it is known that taking medicine which includes "Otogirisō" induces CYP3A4 and CYP1A2, the subtype of drug-metabolizing enzyme cytochrome P450. It arises caution about the drug interactions (decreased benefits) between "Otogirisō" and other medicines. The following medications should be avoided: HIV protease inhibitor (Indinavir, Saquinavir, Ritonavir, Nelfinavir), HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitor (Efavirenz, Nevirapine), Warfarin, Digoxin, Theophylline, Cyclosporin, anticonvulsants (Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital), oral contraceptive, and Fluvoxamin maleate. | |||||
