Remarks | Santō Akyō (Jap. name), produced in Shandong Prov., is of fair quality. Japanese Ejiao is made from the skin, bone and tendon of cows, pigs and whales. Though, cow's skin and bone are often used, it is not for medicinal but for industrial use. Therefore, gelatinum is often substituted for Ejiao in Japan. "Tamaakyō" is the heated and swelled fragments of Ejiao. It is not appropriate to use it as Ejiao since the quality of the original glue is uncertain and it is processed using high temperatures. "Rokkakukyō" and "Rokujōkyō", made from deer horn and pilose antler respectively, are high quality. Their medicinal virtues are slightly different from Ejiao. They are used as medicine for warming the spleen and liver, and strengthening essence and tonifying the blood. They are applied for impotence and spermatorrhea, cold pain of loin and knee, macerating and consumptive disease, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, melaena, hematochezia and hematuria, cellulitis of Yin and pain of swelling. | |||||
