Common usesRed sanders wood is astringent, tonic and diaphoretic. It is used in diseases of the blood, dysentery, bilious affections and thirst. Externally it is applied on inflammation of skin, headache, to reduce high temperature during fever and to strengthen eye sight.

Chemical constituent
Wood contains santalin 16%, desoxysantalin, isoflavone-santal, pterostilbene, pterocarpin 0.25%, Homopterocarpin 0.2%. Heartwood contains glycosides and coumarins.

Pharmacological effectDecoction of heartwood in doses varying from 1-8g/kg produced potentiation of pentobarbitone induced hypnosis in albino mice, blocked conditioned avoidance response in rats and showed anticonvulsant and antiinflammatory activities. An ethanolic extract 95% of the wood powder was found effective in lowering blood sugar level in fasted, fed, glucose loaded and streptozotocin diabetic models in rats.

Traditional usage1. Raktacandana (Pterocarpus santalinus) pounded with breast milk, warm ghee mixed with rocksalt with water check hiccough by taking as snuff.

2. Raktacandana is included in Bhadrasriyadi gana and Priyanguadi niruha basti which are useful in the disorder.

3. Paste of Manjistha, Madhuka, Raktacandana and Sali rice flour mixed with ghee washed 100 times should be applied on fracture.

4. Raktacandana, Manjistha, Kustha, Lodhra, Priyangu, buds of Vata and Masura - these destroy freckles etc and promote lusture of the face.

5. Daruharidra, Duralabha, Bilva, Balaka, Raktacandana check diarrhoea/diarrhea caused by Pitta.

6. Lodhra, Usira, Padmaka, Lotus stamens, Kaliyaka, Raktacandana, Priyangu flowers, Dugdhika and lotus stalk - these counter act all types of spider poisoning.

7. Raktacandana rubbed with water, honey, ghee and oil each for a week applied as collyrium alleviates defects of vision.
