Distribution area | It occurs as a natural deposit. Crude borax is found in masses by evaporation of water on shores of dried up lakes in India and Tibet, it is also obtained from the mud of lakes surrounded by hills in Nepal. | |||||

Common uses | Borax is given internally in doses varying from 5-10 grains, in acidity of stomach, amenorrhoea/amenorrhea, dysmenorrhoea/dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, puerperal convulsions and to promote uterine pains during labour. As a solvent it is given in uric acid diathesis with good results. This is used in all sorts of phlegmatic complaints from common catarrh to bronchitis and pneumonia even attended with discharges from the ears and the nose. | |||||

Traditional usage | In "Kaphaja" type of fevers a pill called "Kapha ketu rasa" made of aconite, borax and reduced conch shell in equal parts, powdered, mixed well and soaked over three times in the juice of fresh ginger and made into pills of two grains each is given with honey and ginger juice. Borax enters in to the composition of numerous formulae for dyspepsia, loss of appetite and indigestion such as Amrtakalpa rasa, Tankanadi vati, etc. | |||||
