Distribution areaSugarcane is cultivated widely in the warmer and humid parts of India, Ceylon, Malay Archipelago, Philippines, West Indies and Africa. It is probably indigenous to India.
Common usesFresh juice is cooling, sweet, restorative, aphrodisiac, diuretic, laxative, cardiotonic and is used in general debility, haemophilic/hemophilic conditions, impotence, jaundice, urinary diseases, cough, asthma, cardiac problems, anaemia/anemia, ulcers of the skin and mucous membranes. Fresh juice of the stem with cow's milk and coconut water is given to women in labor. A decoction of the stem is given for diarrhoea/diarrhea in children. Sugar in addition to being a food is an antidote against copper and arsenic poisoning. Sugarcane juice freely drunk or with a little dry ginger rubbed into it and taken relieves hiccough. Sugar candy mixed with curds is a nice drink to relieve the heat sensation in the body. For spermatorrhoea/spermatorrhea, a mixture of sugar candy and borax is taken daily for seven days. Sugarcandy dissolved in water and given for drinking stops purgation. Sugar is considered useful in heat, delirium and is used externally as an antiseptic and sprinkled upon ulcers.

Roots are cooling and diuretic and are useful in uropathy.
The stems (sugarcane) are sweet, cooling, emollient, laxative, cardiotonic, diuretic, galactagogue, aphrodisiac, expectorant, haemostatic/hemostatic and tonic. They are useful in dipsia, fatigue, leprosy, gastropathy, cardiac debility, haematemesis/hematemesis, cough, bronchitis, anaemia/anemia, ulcers of the skin and mucous membrane, agalactation, seminal weakness, emaciation and general debility.

CommentsIt comes under iksuvikara. Guda, phanita, matsyandi, khanda, sita are included in the processed products of sugarcane. Juice of sugarcane when attains a harder consistency than the juice by boiling is called phanita. It has less of solid and more of liquid consistency. When it becomes still harder it becomes lintus like with less water content. It is called matsynadi. When it becomes hard like mud it is called guda. Phanita is guru (heavy) in guna. Its actions are brmhana (bulk promoting) and sukrakrt (increases semen). It aggravates Kapha and pacifies Vata and Pitta. It reduces srama (tiredness). Guda is heavy and unctuous. It pacifies Vata and is aphrodisiac. It does not aggravate Pitta to a great extent. It increases medas (fat), Kapha, krmi (worm infestation). It is balaprada (improves strength). Old guda is sweet in taste, light and wholesome. It increases digestive fire and pacifies Pitta and Vata. New guda causes Kapha, svasa (asthmatic conditions), krmi (worm infestation) and agnikrt (increases digestive fire). It aggravates medas (fat), mamsa, majja and blood. Guda acts differently based on the vehicle used in its administeration. When taken with ardraka it pacifies Kapha. When taken with haritaki it pacifies Pitta. When taken with sunthi it pacifies Vata. Khanda is Sweet in taste, cold in potency. It is balya (improves strength), brmhana (bulk promoting), caksusya (good for eyes) and vrsya (aphrodisiac). It is good in vanti (vomiting). Sita is light. Sitopala (sugarcandy) is light and laxative. It is sita in virya and pacifies Vata and Pitta. Sita pacifies vitiated blood.
