Distribution areaThroughout India, upto 1800m altitude, usually along river banks. Also cultivated as shade trees along roadsides.
Common usesThis drug is astringent, carminative, diuretic, digestive, anthelmintic, stomachic and antibacterial. This is used in the treatment of haemorrhages/hemorrhages, burning sensation, dysentery, diarrhoea/diarrhea, dyspepsia, cough, asthma, diabetes, sore throat and excessive thirst. Decoction of the bark is given internally for diarrhoea and dysentery. Externally it is used for cleaning ulcers and as a mouthwash for spongy gums. A fine paste of the bark with cow's milk cures bloody discharge in dysentery. Bark is used in dyeing and tanning.
Pharmacological effectExtracts of the bark possess moderate antibiotic activity against Microcccus pyogenes var. aureus. Bark extract is reported to have an effect on glycogenolysis and glycogen storage in animals. Extracts of bark are toxic to Piricularia oryzae Cav. and Physalospora tucumanesis Speg.
