Distribution area | Occurs in Bengal, Assam, Deccan, Madras and from Konkan Southwards in India, Ceylon, Java and Philippine Islands. It is rather common in Ceylon upto about 3000 feet altitude. | |||
Common uses | Roots and young stalks of this plant are considered to have emetic and expectorant properties and are used in eye diseases and snake bite. Leaves are used, ground into paste, as an application on boils and abscesses. The sweet variety plant is tonic, cooling, aphrodisiac and used in the treatment of biliousness, burning sensation, diseases of the eyes. The bitter variety is alexiteric, antipyretic, astringent to the bowels and aphrodisiac and is used in dyspepsia, inflammations, rat bite, cures tumours/tumors, piles, leucoderma, asthma and urinary discharges. | |||
Pharmacological effect | An alcoholic extract (50%) of the plant showed activity on the central nervous system. It also showed anti cancer activity against Sarcoma 180 in the mice. The maximum tolerated dose was found to be 500mg/kg, b.w. of albino mice. | |||
