A pale green diffuse, much branched herb. Much broken up dried plant consisting of stem, leaves and many globular, smooth capsules of pin head size and dark brown seeds having a bitter acrid and astringent tastes.

Distribution areaIt is found over the greater part of India from Indo-Gangetic Plain. Fumaria officinalis Linn. is not indigenous to India but is imported into the country from Persia. An allied variety Fumaria indica syn. F. parviflora is found in many parts of India and is used in place of actual drug. It grows in wheat fields in the winter season.
Function and propertiesStomach, Blood.

Diaphoretic, sudorific, diuretic, laxative, cholagogue, stomachic, anthelmintic, tonic, sedative, alterative and blood purifier.
Specific actionsBlood purifier and alterative (for fevers).

Common usesFumitory is regarded as tonic for stomach, blood purifier, particularly for the chronic ailments like syphilis, scrofula and leprosy. Administered in gastric disorders such as constipation, dyspepsia, due to debilitating conditions of the liver and intestines as well as for jaundice. In chronic fevers added with other suitable drugs, it acts as an effective alterative. Its decoction and infusion directly help body in getting rid of black bile (in excess) and thus purifies the blood. It is therefore regarded as useful against melancholic disorders. Distillate (Arq) is effective against those conditions which arise due to blood disorders.
Side effectProlong use is considered harmful for lungs.

RemarksThe drug by the name of Shahtraraj is imported from Iran and used by Unani practioners and has been thoroughly chemically assayed. Indian plant needs detail study, to make it more effective for local uses.
