DescriptionFeatures:
Laterally compressed, oval or slightly kidney shaped seeds, upto 1.5mm in diameter, surface of the testa is greyish brown in colour having fine wavy reticulations. Odour-tobacco like; taste-acrid, bitter and oily.

Distribution areaIt is found from Kashmir to Garhwal, 5,000-11,000 ft. It is also found in Egypt, Pakistan, Iran (Khurasan), Baluchistan and in other countries of the sub-continent. There are three types of Ajwain Khurasani on the basis of the colour of flowers. (1) White, (2) Red and (3) Black. These varieties are also found in European countries.
DescriptionWhite variety is mostly used by the Unani physicians. After this the red variety is used. But the black variety is not allowed to use.
Seeds are more potent than leaves. The potency of the seeds remain upto one year. After this the seeds are expired.
Function and propertiesRespiratory organs, Nerves, Excretion.
Anodyne, Digestive, Astringent, Anthelmintic.
Specific actionsSedative and hypnotic, antiphlegmatic for high cough. It acts as repellant for unctuous or fatty matters.
Frequency in useAbundant.
Common usesSeeds of Henbane are useful in phlegmatic cough, check catarrh and haemoptysis/hemoptysis. Largely prescribed in mental excitement, chronic dementia with insomnia, paralysis, neuralgia, palpitation, spasmodic affections, irritation in kidneys, uterus, and bladder as well as in hysteria. Decoction of seeds when used as gargles relieves toothache. It is also used for earache after mixing it with the sesame oil.
Side effectLong term use or large doses may impair memory, may cause vertigo, insanity and other symptoms like hypochondria and hypnosis. White variety seeds are preferred in practice due to their mildness. It is a poison. It causes mania.

Drug effectIt is very useful in phlegmatic cough. It is very harmful for brain. Its prolonged use makes the body cold and the colour of the body becomes pale. The patient becomes unable to talk properly in senses. Without proper treatment the patient may also die.
Dosage500 mg to 1gm.
SubstituteAfiyun and Khash khas (Papaver somniferum Linn. opium and seeds).
Related drugsThe black variety is most harmful and corrupt. Next comes the red variety in this respect. The juice and oil of banj may be used.

Banj acts as a sedative for gout pain when used as a paint and 750 mg. are taken orally with hydromel. It relieves pain caused by swellings, dissolves the hard swellings of testicles and is useful for erysipelas. It has anaesthetic properties.
