DescriptionFeatures:
Pieces of sympodically branched, laterally compressed rhizome, 3 to 15cm long and 1.5 to 3.5cm broad, demarcated into nodal and internodal regions. Outer surface pale brown in colour, longitudinally shrivelled, bearing circular scars of scale leaves in nodal region. A number of long tubular roots are seen arising from the under surface. Fracture - short with a number of fibres, odour - mango like; taste - pungent.

Distribution areaA herb grows wild in hills, also cultivated in Bengal, Madhya Pradash, southwards to Tamil Nadu and also on the West coast of India.
DescriptionIt is a type of root which resembles turmeric but larger than it. They have an agreeable fragrant smell and bitter taste. The rhizomes have an odour of raw mangoes and are used as spice and condiment.

Specific actionsInfusion and paste are modes of preparations. Resolvent, carminative and stomachic.

Common usesRhizomes are also used externally in the form of paste as an application for bruises and skin diseases (boils etc.). It is used for improving the quality of blood (in the impairment of blood). It is mainly used in trauma (sunstroke) and fall or collapse. Some physicians also use it for curing cough and fever.

Fresh root is used as an ingredient in chutneys like ginger. Infusion of the root is employed to give the flavour of the mango artificially to confectionery.
