DescriptionFeatures:
Heart shaped, obliquely ovoid, drupaceous nut with a fleshy pear shaped receptacle. It is upto 2.5cm long and two cm broad. Surface brownish black, glossy, somewhat shrivelled. Internally the nut contains a viscous oily liquid of black colour. Odour - none; taste - acrid and sweet.

Distribution areaThroughout deciduous forests of India, below elevations of about 3,000 ft.
DescriptionIt is somewhat like Amlaj (Phyllanthus emblica Linn.) in taste. The pulp is as sweet as hazelnut.
Function and propertiesAlimentary organs, Excretion.
Digestive, laxative, detersive, astringent, tonic for brain, eye and digestive tract.
According to Avicenna (Ibn Sina) it possesses dual properties that of loosening the bowels as well as causing constipation.
Specific actionsTonic for the digestive tract.

Common usesAlimentary organs: It strengthens the stomach by improving its capacity of coction and assimilation and is helpful in relaxity and moistness of the stomach.

Excretion: Sometimes it may cause constipation but physicians believe it to be only laxative. It is useful for rectum and anus. It is also useful for piles.
Side effectAs single remedy or in compound (trifal), its prolonged uninterrupted use is not advised. It may be harmful for intestines and anus.

Traditional conceptTemperamentIt is cold in the first and dry in the second degree (Avicenna). But according to others it is cold in the second degree.
