Traditional usage- The root is stomachic, diuretic, antipyretic, jaundice, anti-inflammatory of bladder, aphrodisiac, anti-diarrhoea/anti-diarrhea, anti-edema, expectorant and body tonic.

- Leaves are anti-scabies, anti-dermatitis and anti-spasmodic.
Drug effectStomachic, Diuretic.
Chemical constituent
- Aerial part: cissampeloflavone

- Root: alkaloids, pareitropone, bulbocapnine, bebeerines, beburine, berberine, cissamine, cissampareine, cissampeline, corytuberine, curine, 4-methylcurine, cyclanoline, cyleanine, dehydrodicentrine, dicentrine, dimethyltetrandrinium, grandirubine, hayatine, hayatinine, insularine, isochondodendrine, isomerubrine, laudanosine, magnoflorine, menismine, norimeluteine, nor-ruffscine, nuciferine, pareirine, pareirubrine, pelosine, sepurine, tetrandine, quercitol, sterol, essential oil, linoleic acid, arachidic acid.

- Leaf: pectin, oxo-apoephine, palmatine.

Pharmacological effect- Root: antinocciceptive, antiarthritic, anti-inflammatory, antileukemia, cardiotonic, hypotension, antifungal, antimicrobial, smooth muscle relaxant,uterine relaxant, diuretic, antiulceration, anticonvulsant, antioxidant.

- Leaf: antifertility.

PreparationsRoot- decoction
Stems (vine) - powdered in tablets or capsules for curing menstrual difficulties
Decoction of the roots taken 2-3 times daily in a cup is used for muscular relaxant and menstrual disorder.
Leaves are crushed and used for dermatitis. The crushed leaves mixed with water and given a jelly is a good refreshment in summer.
Side effectIt relaxes the uterus and is contraindicated in pregnancy.
