Frequency in useModerate
Pharmacological effectThe antispasmodic activity of the fruits of Helicteres isora was checked in vitro on guinea-pig ileum against three spasmogensm acetylcholine, histamine and barium chloride. The activity was compared with standard antispasmodic agents, atropine and dipheynhydramine hydrochloride. The activity was also studied in vivo by observing the gastrointestinal motility in mice. The results shown that the fruits possess very good antispasmodic activity [PMID:11180523].

The aqueous ethanol and butanol extracts of Helicteres isora root had shown significant protection and lowered the blood glucose levels to normal in glucose tolerant test.

A concentrated EtOH extract of the ground root logs yield two potent cytotoxic compounds, identified as cucurbitacin B and isocucurbitacin B. Both compounds have been previously isolated as natural cytotoxic substances [PMID:4031904].
