Original plant nameUsnea sp.
Family nameUsneaceae
Used partWhole plant
Distribution areaIt occurs throughout Indonesia.
DescriptionUsnea has some species:
 1. Usnea articulata (Linn.) Hoffman
 2. U. dasypoga (Acharius) Nylander
 3. U. longissima Acharius
 4. U. steineri Zahl Bruckner
 5. U. vrieseana Montagne et van den Bos hand
 6. U. barbata
Usnea is not a plant, but it is a symbiotic relationship between an algae and a fungus. It looks like a long, fuzzy strings hanging from trees in the forests. It usually has a greyish green color and grows as a bushy mat from a few inches to two or three feet long, hanging off the trunks and branches. It feels dry and coarse. Some species have an inner core of white material which may be exposed by gently pulling on either end of a strand. It is bitter and astringent.
Drug effectAstringent, antibacterial [231].
Specific actionsAstringent [231].
Frequency in useModerate
Side effectNo known side effects, and it has not been reported to interfere with the action of common medications. It is considered safe for use in children.
Pharmacological effectUsnic acid acts as an antibiotic.

Sodium usnic acid can accelerate skin wound healing but the effects was not by stimulating proliferation of fibroblasts [PMID:15981883].

Hepatotoxic effect of (+)usnic acid isolated from Usnea siamensis Wainio was studied in rats, isolated rat hepatocytes and isolated rat liver mitochondria. Results indicated that hepatotoxic effect of high dose (+)usnic acid may involve its reactive metabolite(s), causing loss of integrity of membrane like structures, resulting in destruction of mitochondrial respiration and oxidative phosphorylation [PMID:15013205].

Various solvent extracts of the lichen Usnea ghattensis showed good antioxidant activity. These extracts also inhibited the growth of Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus with MIC values of 5-10 microg/ml [PMID:16132842].

The antiplatelet and antithrombotic activities of a methanol extract of Usnea longissima, were investigated on platelet aggregation in vitro and on pulmonary thrombosis in vivo. It is shown that the antithrombotic activity of U. longissima extract might be due to antiplatelet activity rather than anticoagulant activity [PMID:16372374].
Medical systemIndonesian medicine (Jamu)
Traditional usageUsnea dasypoga is considered an important ingredient in Indonesian traditional medicine and sold in the local markets. It is used to treat diarrhoea/diarrhea, gastroenteric problems, dysentery, mouth ulcer, spasms, urinary retention, kidney problems, haemorrhoid/hemorrhoid, menstruation problems. It helps and eases parturition and can be used after parturition as a tonic. It was once used by women of the royal family as an ingredient in face powder, by mixing it with starch and turmeric [201].
To cure diarrhoea/diarrhea, the thallus is boild with water, mixed with ginger and pounded, squeezed. Drink the juice [201].
