| Remarks | The origin of the use of the fruits of Nandina domestica var. leucocarpa or Nandina domestica as an antitussive in Japan is unknown, although it does not appear to have been introduced from China. In the crude drug market, both "white Nanten" and "red Nanten" are available. Because the fruits of the white-fruited variety are considered superior, the fruits of the common red-fruited Nandina domestica are often bleached and sold as white Nanten. These bleached fruits lack luster, have no waxy bloom on the surface, and possess a thin pericarp. | |||||
