RemarksIt is a typical Japanese folk medicine. It was blended in Japanese medicine "Hangontan" as the substitute for Chinese crude drug "Huhuanglian". "Huhuanglian" is the rhizome of Picrorrhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell or P. kurrooa Royle ex Benth. Chirayta (Chirata, Chiretta, Kiratatikta) is the whole plant of Swertia chirayta (Roxb.) Karst. and listed in the medical book of Ayurveda, "Caraka Samhita".
It has effect of decreasing excess Kapha Dosa, or phlegmatic temperament, and is applied to treat diseases of blood vessels and skin.
