In China, the root of Codonopsis pilosula is often used under the name of "Dangshen". In Korea, however, it has been used under the name of "Mansam" as a folk medicine, since there is no medicine called "Dangshen". We found the roots of C. lanceolata Trautv. (Jap. name: Tsuruninjin) among "Mansams" in the market. It is the original plant of Korean "Shashen" (Chinese "Shashen" belongs to fthe genus Adenophora ). In China, the roots of C. lanceolata is called "Yangru" (羊乳) and used to enrich the blood and to stimulate milk secretion, nourish Yin (vital essence) symptoms of dryness of the lung, to remove toxic heat, to remove edema and to drain pus.
