RemarksLeaves known in trade as Tejpatta is used in Ayurvedic medicine. Bark of this plant - Indian cassia Lignea - is used as a substitute to the Cinnamon bark obtained from Cinnamomum verum Presl and put to the same uses as C. verum Persl. It is reported that there are two chemotypes of C. tamala - eugenol type and cinnamic aldehyde type- occurring in India, the former occurring more widely than the latter. Eugenol type trees are found in Kashmir, Tehri-Garhwal, other tropical and subtropical Himalayan areas, Khasi & Jaintia hills and west Bengal. These plants are also cultivated. Bark of Cinnamomum tamala is collected for commercial purposes from the trees growing in the foot hills of Sikkim, Himalayas.
