Distribution area | Native of Moluccas. Cultivated in south India, especially in Tamilnadu and to some extent in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. | |||||
Common uses | Nutmeg and mace are used for similar purposes in medicine. It is more commonly used as ingredient of drug formulations prescribed for bronchial diseases, tuberculosis, intermittent fever and as aphrodisiac and is useful in heart diseases. Nutmeg and mace constitute the herbal drug 'Prajna' possessing neurological activity. | |||||

Pharmacological effect | The drug Prajna reduces spontaneous locomotor activity in a dose dependant manner without affecting forced locomotor activity. It potentiated phenobarbitone sleeping time. In all, it exerted only a moderate degree of CNS depression. Mace is found to be neurotoxic whereas nutmeg has an LD50 of 1320mg/kg. i.p. Mace is reported as a chemo-preventor of chemically induced carcinogenesis. It activates the hepatic detoxification system. Bio-activity directed extraction and fractionation have established that the anti-inflammatory activity is due to the major principle myristicin. | |||||
