Common usesThis drug is useful in treating hepatic obstructions, jaundice, dropsy, rheumatism, anasarca and diseases of the urinogential tract.
Seeds are one of the Pancabija (five seeds) of the Ayurvedic materia medica having high diuretic activity. Seeds are given for gonorrhoea/gonorrhea and with milk and sugar in spermatorrhoea/spermatorrhea.

Traditional usage1. Leaves of Kokilaksa (Hygrophila schulli) are cooked along with juice and is taken for arthritic complaints.

2. Ash prepared of Kokilaksa along with cow's urine is good for general oedema

3. Intake of the decoction of Kokilaksa as a drug or as a vegetable alleviates arthritic conditions.

4. Ash of Kokilaksa taken with urine or water is useful in oedema.

5. Root of Kokilaksa is chewed with sugar and with the resultant juice the ear is filled. It helps easy delivery.

6. Powder of the seed of Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens) and Kokilaksa mixed with sugar should be taken with warm milk. By this men do not lose his strength and energy.

7. Decoction of Kakajangha (PERISTROPHE BICALYCULATA NEES?), Apamarga (Achyranthes aspera), Kokilaksa produces sleep.

CommentsLeaves are sweet, bitter and good for swelling, colic, poison, abdominal distension, ascitic swelling caused by Vata, anaemic/anemic conditions, blocks of faecal matter, urine and rheumatic conditions. Seed of Kokilaksa is cold, sweet and astringent. Few other botanical sources like Barleria buxifolia, Artanaema sesamoides, Barleria longifolia, Saccharum officianarum are reported substitutes.

Terms like Kokilaksa, Pikeksana refer to the morphological similarity to cuckoo's eyes. Synonyms Kantaki, Vajrakantaka refer to its thorns. Nadeyi denotes its occurrence near water.
