Distribution areaOccurs in India, Ceylon, Bruma and china. In ceylon it is common in wasteground in the low country Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Minneriya, Galle, Matara, etc.
Common usesThe drug is astringent, acrid, diuretic, diaphoretic and antiperiodic and purifies blood. It is used in the treatment of asthma, toxicosis, fever, diarrhoea/diarrhea, phantom tumours/tumor, excessive urinary secretion, thirst, vomiting, dermatosis, venereal diseases, diabetes, haemorrhoids/hemorrhoids, gastropathy, melagia and brachialgia.

A paste prepared from the roots is applied for the extraction of guinea worms. Mixed with the juice of Ocimum sanctum, the paste is employed in the treatment of itchy eruptions on the skin.

Leaves are used in headache.

Root is useful in acute congestion of the liver, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and typhoid. It is also used as an application for leprosy. Root boiled in milk is given at bed time for any cough.
