DescriptionFeatures:
Anise seeds are smaller than the fennel. The odour of anise seeds is pleasant and the taste is slight bitter. There are two varieties of anise. Its Nabatean variety is less pungent than the Roman variety. The Roman variety is sweet and hotter than the former. Fresh anise is best, has a strong smell, large sized seeds are the best and its peel does not fall down from it like bran.

Distribution areaA herb; native to Mediterranean region but now cultivated in various states of India (Uttar Pradash, Punjab, Assam and Orissa). It was first discovered in Egypt and Rome. Later on it was reported from European countries (Russia, Spain, Holland, Bulgaria, France and Turkey). Now it is cultivated in Russia at a large scale. It is estimated that Unani physicians, who came from Iran, had introduced this drug into India. It is a very important drug, which is in use in Unani System of Medicine for 2000 years. It is recorded in the book written by Farastus.
Function and propertiesOrgans of the head, Ocular organs, Ocular organs, Respiratory and chest organs, Fevers, Swellings and pimples, Alimentary organs, Excretory organs.
Seeds are aromatic, stimulant, carminative, stomachic, antispasmodic, emmenagogue (galactagogue) and demulcent. Essential oil is also aromatic, stomachic and carminative.
Specific actionsIt is deobstruent with a little astringency, carminative and flavouring agent.

Common usesOrgans of the head: The smoke, arising from anise when placed on fire, gives relief against headache and vertigo. Ear drops prepared by its fine powder diluted in rose oil brings relief against earache associated with headache or an internal or external injury.

Ocular organs: It is useful for chronic vascular keratitis.

Respiratory and chest organs. It facilitates the respiration and the production of milk in the breast.

Fevers: It is useful for chronic fevers. Roghan anisun (anise oil) is applied to head in headache and to the abdomen in flatulence and intestinal colic.

Anise water is similar in action as anti-spasmodic. Anise seeds are useful in bowel complaints as well as bronchial catarrh.

Swellings and pimples: It relieves against oedema and swellings of extremities.

Alimentary organs: It removes the obstruction of liver and spleen caused by boraceous humours.

Excretory organs: It is a diuretic, promotes the discharge of white fluid from the uterus and cleanses it. It also acts as an aphrodisiac. It is a deobstruent for kidneys, bladder and uterus.
Side effectSometimes it causes constipation because of its diuretic property. It removes the poisonous effects of insect bites.

RemarksAccording to Ibn al-Baytar it's wine (prepared with sugar and then it is decocted with Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn.) is very useful in bronchitis and chest complaints. Its fumigation is also useful in catarrh and headache.
According to Avicenna (Ibn Sina), the best anise peel does not fall from seeds like bran. But according to Dioscorides the best anise is that in which peel falls from the seeds. Iqritushi (an island) variety is better than the Egyptian variety (Dioscorides). According to Zakarya al-Razi this drug cures dropsy and removes flatulence.
