Root is also hot and dry. The root of Badiyan is whitish in colour and is used as a crude drug separately. Fruit about 6mm long, greenish yellow, the vittae very conspicuous. Odour - pleasant; aromatic; taste - sweet.

Distribution areaExtensively cultivated in India. Apparently a native of S. Europe, but now distributed over temperate and subtropical regions of the world.
Function and propertiesEye, Chest, Food, Excretion, Fevers.
Plant is aromatic. Fruits are regarded as stimulant, carminative, diuretic, masticatory, flavouring agent, as condiment, emmenagogue, lactagogue, antiflatulent, check griping of purgatives and tonic to stomach. Useful for eyesight.
Specific actionsTonic for digestive tract (especially stomach) and for eyesight.

Common usesFennel removes obstructions.

Eye: Fennel strengthens the eyesight.

Chest: The moist kind of fennel particularly the garden fennel increases the secretion of milk.

Food: It is a safe drug in indigestion, abdominal pain and gastritis. In flatulence, flatulent colic and stomach debility, the drug is widely used. It is useful in cases of nausea. It is slow to digest and inferior in nutrition.

Excretion: Its wild variety is particularly deobstruent.

Fevers: Fennel is useful in chronic fevers and when taken with cold water, it proves to be useful in nausea and feeling of burning in the stomach during fevers.
Side effectIt causes constipation when taken along with its root. It is slow to digest. Its decoction with wine is useful in insect bite cases. Its powdered root is painted over the bite of mad dog.

Traditional conceptTemperamentIt is hot and dry in the second degree (garden fennel). According to Avicenna (Ibn Sina) the wild fennel is very hot and dry in the third degree.
