Distribution area | Native to Western Asia; cultivated in N. India for its edible seeds. It mostly occurs in the forests of Syria, Palestine and Persia and cultivated in Afghanistan. | |||
Function and properties | Chest and stomach, Food, Excretion. Nutritious and nourishing; having sedative and tonic properties particularly for heart and brain. Peel - expectorant, astringent and antinauseant. It is regarded as a sexual tonic, fattening and expectorant. | |||

Common uses | Chest and stomach: Fruit peel (Qishr al-Fustuq) is regarded as astringent for gums, cardiac and stomach tonic, sedative for vomiting, relieves vomiting and hiccup. Food: Nuts are sweet and agreeable and used as food being very wholesome and nourishing. Useful in cough and eases expectoration. Excretion: It is included in aphrodisiac confections, to relieve kidney and general debilitating conditions. Oil of Pistachio is regarded as demulcent and may be used as substitute for almond oil. | |||
Side effect | It has not particular side effects, but harmful while individuals suffering from chronic ailments. Testa is regarded as constipatory due to its astringent action. | |||
