Distribution areaAn evergreen shrub or tree, native to Mediterranean region. It is mostly found in Islands. It is imported into India from Asia Minor through Persia and Afghanistan.
Function and propertiesCosmetics, Head, Chest, Swellings, Ulcers, Alimentary organs, Excretion.

Tonic to stomach and liver, carminative, demulcent, expectorant, astringent, resolvent of inflammations, absorbent (of catarrh) for the internal organs, laxative, styptic, detergent and aphrodisiac.
Specific actionsDiuretic and emmenagogue, resotrative tonic and absorbent of waste humours and catarrh.

Common usesCosmetics: As detergent useful for face abnormalities of skin and included in cosmetics to remove freckles and spots as skin paste.

Head: It is used as a masticatory to sweeten the breath and to preserve teeth and gums.

Chest: Being an effective absorbent and styptic, administered for the purpose of arresting unwanted secretion of humours and bleeding.
It is effective in haemoptysis/hemoptysis. Being demulcent and expectorant useful against cough and to clear the wind pipe of obstructions. It acts as laxative for phlegm, with aloe as laxative for biliousness and with halilajat (Fruits of Terminalia spp.) as laxative of atrabile.

Swellings: It is useful in visceral inflammations.

Ulcers: It is useful in creeping ulcers.

Alimentary organs: Being stomachic and carminative it is mainly used in the weakness of the stomach. Being astringent it is extensively employed in infantile diarrhoea/diarrhea.

Excretion: It strengthens the kidneys and intestine and proves useful in cases of swellings in these organs.
Side effectDescribed as harmful for patients suffering from anal ailments and may produce bloody urine and dermititis.
