DescriptionFeatures:
A copiously branched herbaceous perennial, 30 to 60cm high; branches glabrous. Leaves 5 to 10cm long; petioles 6 to 12cm long; leaflets 11 to 21, oblanceolate, obtuse or retuse, mucronate, 2 by 1.2cm, glabrous above, clothed with fine appressed silky hairs beneath. Pods 3 to 4.5cm long, linear, slightly curved, mucronate, at first thinly hairy. Seeds 5 to 6.

Distribution areaA herb occurring all over India and also grown as a green manure. It grows on a hard stony ground too. It is difficult to be rooted.

Blood purifier, diuretic, alterative (in intermittent fevers), alexipharmic and preventive for toxicity and for bloody piles.

Common usesSkin: Purple Tephrosia is regarded blood purifier against skin disorders i.e. itching, scabies, prurigo, pimples, furuncles, boils, syphilis and leprosy. In these disorders decoction and infusion are administered. As antidote and detoxicant it has esteemed position in nullifying the toxicity of certain poisons. Particularly useful against calx’s side effects, infectious disorders of long duration and when administered as leaves extract.

Alimentary organs: Powder of root bark with black pepper is useful against enlargements and obstructions of the liver, spleen, kidneys and enlarged scrotum.

Excretion: It also acts as diuretic and against bloody piles. Infusion of seeds is employed as anthelmintic for children.

RemarksAccording to Hakeem Saifuddin the whole plant is considered as resolvent, laxative and blood purifier. Its blood purifying virtues are highly esteemed in Unani medicine. It is found very beneficial in skin disorders.
Its root bark is also used medicinally.
