DescriptionFeatures:
An annual hairy plant, with marigold type flowers - pale-rose having yellowish centre.
Roots long, finger like thick. Cylindrical and tapering, having some hair like rootlets. Externally the root is rough, shrivelled surface, compact but brittle. Odour - aromatic; taste - pungent. On chewing it gives a tingling sensation to the tongue and lips and causes excessive flow of saliva.

Distribution areaIndigenous to North Africa, also found in Syria, Algeria and introduced into South Europe.
DescriptionMostly the root of pellitory plant is used. The best pellitory is bitter in taste, irritant to tongue and throat. It is as thick as a finger. These are cut pieces of root which are upto four inches in length. The external surface is brownish and wrinkled. The taste is very sharp and irritant. On chewing it the saliva starts flowing from the mouth.
Function and propertiesNervous system, Male organ.
Mild narcotic, deobstruent, stimulant, antiphlegmatic, heat producing to the humours, aphrodisiac and promotes saliva and menstruation.
Specific actionsIt is aphrodisiac. Massage with it in combination with olive oil causes excessive perspiration. Massage with its decoction or oil is useful in chronic atony and sensory loss in nerves.

Common usesIt is used for curing facial paralysis, hemiplegia and trembling. It prevents the occurrence of tetanus in the patients prone to it. It is highly deobstruent for nasal obstructions pertaining to the ethmoid bone. It is aphrodisiac and is used with honey or with formulations. It provides strength and retention to the male organ.
