Distribution areaA climbing or trailing, hispid annual, native to tropical Africa but cultivated throughout India. It is also found in Sukkur District of Sind in Pakistan.
DescriptionThe seeds are small, shining, flat, blackish or reddish in colour, having a hard testa.
Function and propertiesHead, Body tonic, Chest, Excretion.

Seeds fattening, cooling, demulcent for thoracic region, diuretic, aperient and cures biliousness.

Common usesHead: The seeds remove dryness in brain and insomnia. Seeds in suitable vehicle are given orally. The seeds are tonic to the brain.

Body tonic: Seeds are moist, coolant and fattening tonic for body, used in all those situations where fruit is recommended.

Chest: In hoarseness, cough due to warmness in thoracic region, haemoptysis/hemoptysis, also prescribed in phthisis.

Stomach: Also useful in burning sensation.

Excretory organs: Being diuretic it is given in gonorrhoea/gonorrhea, urine inflammation and dysuria caused due to hotness and dryness.
Side effectIt is harmful for spleen in continuous use.

RemarksHakims consider water melon's use as appropriate before the meals and it is considered that taking after the meal it may cause food poisoning.
It is included in the list of drugs used both in Unani and Ayurvedic Systems of Medicine.
The kernels are only used as drug in Unani System of Medicine.

Seeds are considered very nutritive. The pulp of the fruit is also cooling and diuretic.
