DescriptionThe drug consists of thread like stems of Cuscuta reflexa.

Features:
Leafless, parasitic annual, stem very long, rather stout, closely twining, branched, glabrous, pale greenish yellow, sometimes dotted with red. The fresh material possesses a characteristic odour and is slightly bitter in taste.

Distribution areaA parasitic climber. Common through out the plains of India, ascending the hills up to 8,000 ft.
DescriptionIt is an air creeper, like yellow threads, leafless and without roots. It has a bitter taste.

Common usesAkasbel is boiled and crushed and is applied on boils. The inhalation of its extract relieves flatulence. Its decoction is used to expel out the worms. Its poultice is applied on swellings of abdomen. It is a good purgative for phlegmatic humours which are produced in excess. In atrabilious disorders like insanity, melancholia, epilepsy, and incubus nightmare, it is prescribed by Unani Hakims. It is regarded as a blood purifier, resolve inflammations, and acts as deobstruent. Its paste applied over spleen and stomach to relieve pain. In jaundice it is applied over the liver region of abdomen.

Joints: It is useful in convulsions.

Alimentary organs: It produces pain, vomiting and thirst in persons having excessive bile.
Side effectDescribed as harmful (on frequent or large dose use) for lungs.

Traditional conceptTemperamentIt is hot and dry in second degree. According to Galen it is hot and dry in the third degree.
Drug effectIt is a strong purgative for black bile and phlegm if its decoction (14 gm.) mixed with honey and salt is taken as one dose.

RemarksIndian physicians prescribe Aftimune-hindi (C. reflexa) in place of Aftimune-vilaiyti (Cuscuta epithymum) and use aftimune hindi for other purposes also. Seeds are used separately and these will be described under the new drug Tukhme-kasusa (seeds of Cuscuta reflexa).
