Description | The fruits of Zanthoxylum armatum are bigger in size than the cubeb. It is splitted upto the half length of the fruit, small spherical in shape, having dark brown colour. Odour - agreeable or pleasant; taste - pungent or fast and aromatic. | ||||
Function and properties | Head and heart, Stomach. It is an aromatic drug. Its odour and use both are cardiac and brain tonic, tonic for cold stomach and cold liver, digestive tonic, carminative, relieves flatulence and acts as an astringent. | ||||

Common uses | Head and heart: Smelling as well as its use impart fragrant effects on heart and brain. Stomach: It is a useful tonic for digestion and stomach, relieves flatulence and it is also prescribed in liver disorders. As it is astringent, therefore, recommended as antidiarrhoeal/antidiarrheal. It is very useful in the cold cephalic complaints. | ||||
Side effect | It is used as aromatic masticatory when chewed in malodours state of mouth to avoid it. Excessive use may cause headache and increased astringency may lead to constipation. | ||||

Related drugs | The fruits of a number of other species of Zanthoxylum growing wild in different parts of India are used as substitutes. The fruits of Z. rhetza (Roxb.) DC., are used mostly in south India. It is larger in size than the fruit of toothache plant. Its taste is lemon like. Fruits of Z. acanthopodium DC. are procured from Eastern India - Khasi Hills. It is similar in size to Z. rhetza. | ||||

Remarks | According to Kabiruddin the drug contains essential oil which is similar to terpentine oil in its odour and properties, hence it is recommended in stomatitis. According to Saifuddin the drug is also useful in toothache. Its bark is also used in Unani medicine under the name ''Tejbal''. The drug is very easily available and have no problem of adulteration. No controversy has been found about this drug in Unani literature. | ||||
