DescriptionFeatures:
The fruits are like black pepper but smooth, having a brownish black colour externally and whitish internally. There is a small column like structure on one side of the fruit. In shape the fruits look like clove. Odour - strong and pleasant; taste - bitter or furious.

Distribution areaThe plant is indigenous to Java, Sumatra and Malay; being imported from Singapore, and are also cultivated to a small extent in India, especially in Mysore area.
Function and propertiesHead, Ulcers, Chest, Excretion.

Demulcent, deobstruent, resolvent, stomachic, carminative, tonic for gums and teeth, useful against hoarseness of voice, diuretic and emmenagogue, stimulant and aromatic and inspissant.
Specific actionsClearing for genito-urinary organs, also useful in gonorrhoea/gonorrhea.
Frequency in useRare in India.
Common usesHead: Its use is beneficial in cases of foul stomatitis. When kept in mouth, it clears the voice. Included in tooth powders to strengthen the gums and teeth.

Ulcers: It is used in putrid ulcers of the gums.

Chest: It is a strong deobstruent to be used in hepatic obstructions.

Excretion: It 'cleanses' urinary tract, facilitates the flow of sandy materials through the urine and removes kidney and bladder stones. In gleet and gonorrhoea/gonorrhea for cleansing and procuring antiseptic effects, cubebs are administered as simple or in compounds, recommended for the purposes.
Side effectDescribed as harmful in bladder disorders. On the respiratory tract it exerts vasodilator action whereas on the urino-genital organs it has stimulant action in recommended doses.
