Distribution areaCultivated or occasionally found self sown in some parts of India, in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Mysore.

Common usesDates are considered as demulcent, expectorant, aphrodisiac, and laxative and are used in respiratory diseases and fever. A paste made from the seeds, by trituration with water is applied in eye diseases; and to the head to relieve headaches and hemicrania. Its toddy is intoxicating, fattening, aphrodisiac and useful in bronchitis.

They are reported to be used in Yemen in cases of memory disturbances.

- Main components of the ripe dates are sugars (85%), sucrose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, ribose, galactose and galacturonic acid; tannin (0.02 to 1.8%); Polyphenols (3%).

- Dried, hard preserved dates (Chhuara) contain: moisture, 11.9; protein 2.2; fat, 0.5; carbohydrates, 82.9 and ash, 1.8%; calcium, 35.9; phosphorus, 129.3 and iron 3.4mg.

- The fruit contains: P-coumaroyl-caffeoyl and feruloyl esters of shikimic acid.

- Presence of rutin and quercetin is also reported in the pollens and flavanoids.

Pharmacological effectA glycoprotein, isolated from the pollen possesses gonadotropic activity. Alcoholic extract of the seed shows antimicrobial activity.

Traditional usage1. A linctus made of Kharjura (dates), Pippali (Piper longum), Draksa (raisins), jaggery and parched paddy, each in equal quantity, added with honey and ghee is an excellent remedy for cough caused by Pitta.

2. Kharjura pulp, coconut, Draksa or Badari (Zizyphus mauritiana) should be taken as linctus for vomiting.

3. Decoction of Kharjura, Kasmari (Gmelina arborea), Tinduka (Diospyros peregrina) and Guduci mixed with honey check haematuria/hematuria.

4. Ghee mixed with Kharjura, Draksa, sugar, honey and Pippali alleviates hoarseness of voice, cough, asthma and fever.

5. Fermented juice of Draksa, sugarcane and Kharjura should be used for irritable bowels.

6. Paste of Draksa and Kharjura should be kept in mouth and gargle should be used for abnormal taste.

7. Pulp of Kharjura or Pippali mixed with honey should be used in hiccough.

8. Kharjura fruit mixed with honey is useful in intrinsic haemorrhage/hemorrhage.
CommentsWatery extract of Kharjura is good for Vata and Kapha, it is appetising, increasing digestion, strength and reproductive tissue. There are three varieties of Kharjura, the other two are Bhumikharjura and Pindakharjura.

Kharjura is included in Sramahara, Virecanopaga, Madhuraskandha, Kasayaskandha, Phalasava of Caraka.
