Common usesThe drug is useful in the treatment of leucoderma, urinary disorders, dysentery, diarrhoea/diarrhea and diabetes mellitus. It promotes complexion of the skin. An aqueous infusion of the wood is said to be of use in diabetes. Water, stored in a tumbler/cup made out of the heartwood is given to the diabetic patients.

The heartwood yields liquiritigenin, ios-liquiritigenin, marsupin, pterosupin, alkaloid (0.017%) and resin.

Pharmacological effectTests on mice and rabbits with alcohol and aqueous extracts of the heartwood have shown hypoglycaemic action. Water extract of the bark contains an active principle (-)epi-catechin which increases the CAMP, content of the islets associated with the increased insulin release, conversion of pro-insulin to insulin and cathepsin B activity.

Traditional usage1. In obesity, decoction of Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium) is taken with honey.

2. Decoction of Asana made linctus like by heating is mixed with Triphala (a group of three fruits), sugar, honey and ghee and taken regularly. It is useful in senility.

3. In obesity, sesamum oil in the morning or decoction of the heartwood of Asana should be taken mixed with honey.

4. Khadira (Acacia catechu) and Asana are drugs of choice for kustha (skin diseases).

5. Intake of paste of heartwood of Khadira, Asana, Sala (Shorea robusta) with cow's urine mixed with honey alleviates filaria.

6. Intake of the decoction of Khadira and Asana as well as external application of their paste mixed with Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) or Triphala destroys all types of gential conditions.

7. For improving vision, Sesamum oil, Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) oil, Bhrngaraja (Eclipta alba) juice, Asana decoction all cooked together in an iron vessel and used as snuff.

8. Alkali of Madhuka (Liquorice) and Asana are used in case of intrinsic haemorrhage/hemorrhage.

9. One should eat Bhrngaraja fried with oil in an iron pan followed by intake of milk cooked with Asana. It alleviates vitiligo.

CommentsThe flowers are sweet in the post digestive effect. They are bitter, digestive and increasing Vata. Synonyms like Nilakanama, Nilaparyaya, Krsnavrksa, denote the brown colour of the bark. Pitasara denotes the yellow heartwood. Karsya denotes it's action on obesity. Sugandhi denotes the odour.
