Common uses | The drug is a bitter tonic, antiperiodic, cholagogue, stomachic, laxative in small doses and cathartic in large doses. They are prescribed for dyspepsia, respiratory disorders, dropsy, diseases of liver and spleen. Picrorhiza is a well known Ayurvedic drug being mainly used in therapy for liver and lung diseases, used also for chronic dysentery and other complaints. This forms an ingredient of the Ayurvedic drug 'Ayush-64' used as an antifilarial drug for the treatment of microfilaraemia. The drug 'Arogyavardhini vati' in which Picrorhiza forms one of the ingredients is used for viral hepatitis. The drug is a reputed Ayurvedic remedy possessing antiinflammatory activity. | |||||

Pharmacological effect | The compound cucurbitacin possesses high cyto-toxicity and exhibits tumour inhibitory effect against sarcoma-280 and Ascites Ehrlich Carcinoma in mice. The plant is reported to exhibit potent immuno-stimulant activity and is considered as immuno-modulatory agent. | |||||

Traditional usage | 1. Along with Jaggery and hot water it is taken for Kapha Pitta type of fever. 2. Katuka (Picrorhiza kurroa) finely powdered and mixed with sugar alleviates fever caused by Pitta. 3. If one takes Katuka mixed with sugar along with warm water, the person overcomes fever caused by Kapha and Pitta. 4. Katuka is powdered and then heated on an earthen piece. The juice mixed with ghee alleviates fever and burning sensation. 5. Oil cooked with powder of Katuka alleviates fever. 6. "Katukadya ghrta" (a formulation) is used for anaemia/anemia and jaundice. 7. Katuka with sugar, juice of Dronapuspi (Leucas aspera) applied as collyrium and snuffing with powder of Devadali (Luffa echinata) - each one of them alleviates anaemia. 8. In heart disease caused by Pitta, one should take paste of Katuka and Madhuka (liquorice) with sugar water. 9. Katuka mixed with sugar or Patola (Trichosanthes cucumerina) and Sunthi (dry ginger) mixed with honey should be taken. 10. For purification of breast milk, the decoction of Katuka should be given. 11. Katuka mixed with Ativisa (Aconitum heterophyllum), Usira (Vetiveria zizanioides) and Candana (sandal) is efficacious in "Kustha" (skin disease). 12. In hiccough, red ochre with Katuka is useful. | |||||
