Common uses | Kasisa is haematinic/hematinic, tonic and astringent. Processed form of this drug is given in ozoena, consumption, enlargement of liver etc. Due to its astringent properties, it is used as a lotion in erysipelas, anaemia and constitutional debility, following malaria, Kalaazar etc. Externally the drug is used in skin diseases either alone or with other medicines. For painful syphilitic ulcers, Feri sulphas is dusted over them after washing them. Its stick or solution is applied to foul ulcers and various skin diseases as eczema, pruritus, intertrigo etc. In chronic skin diseases an ointment made of iron pyrites and ghee is used with benefit. | ||||

Traditional usage | 1. In palpitation due to anemia, it is given with Tvak (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) and "Eluva curna" (aloe extract). 2. Kasisa (Ferrous sulphate) is applied with Triphala* (a group of three fruits) decoction in ulcers. 3. For increasing "rasa dhatu" (a kind of vital tissue), purified Kasisa is taken along with Sarjaksara (a type of alkali). 4. The enema with "Kasisa drava" is beneficial in prolapse of rectum and piles. ----- Triphala*, a group of three fruits of Amalaka, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki is good apetitive, improves the eyesight and is beneficial in chronic intermittent fever. | ||||
Comments | Kasisa is of two varieties as curna kasisa and puspa kasisa. Curna kasisa is said to be yellowish white and puspa kasisa is said to be greenish coloured. | ||||
