Common uses | This drug is considered useful in asthma, catarrh, gastric trouble, cardiac disorders and sexual and general debility. It is used for controlling nausea and vomiting. As a stimulant it is beneficial in cramps of the stomach, gastric irritation and paralysis. A large number of Ayurvedic drug formulations employ it as an ingredient. | |||||

Traditional usage | 1. Tvak (Cinnamomum verum), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Ela (cardamom), Dhanyaka (coriander) and Amalaka (Emblica officinalis) are used as mouth wash for refreshing the mouth. 2. In headache caused by Pitta, paste of Tvak, Patra (Cinnamomum tamala) and Sarkara (jaggery) pounded with rice water should be used as pressed snuff followed by snuffing of ghee. 3. Tvak and Sunthi (ginger) finely pounded in equal quantity should be taken with hot water. It destroys all types of spider poisoning. 4. Tvak, Ela (cardamom), Pippali (Piper longum), Tavaksiri (arrowroot) and Sarkara - successively double in quantity should be powdered and taken as linctus with honey and ghee. It improves voice and alleviates cough, wasting, asthma, chest pain and Kapha. | |||||

Comments | There are two varieties of Tvak mentioned according to Bhavaprakasa nighantu - Tvakpatram and Darusita. Tvakpatra is considered to be Kapha Vata pacifying whereas Darusita is Vata Pitta pacifying. Separate qualities have been mentioned. These may be correlated to Cinnamomum cassia and C. verum respectively. The synonym Sainhala refers to its abundance in Srilanka. This is part of Eladi gana of Susruta and Trijataka group of drugs. | |||||
