Common uses | Flowers are cooling, cardiac tonic and astringent and are used in diarrhea, cholera, fever and liver diseases. Stamens are cooling, astringent, diuretic and aphrodisiac and are useful in diarrhoea/diarrhea, hyperdipsia, haemorrhoids/hemorrhoids, inflammations, stomatitis and menorrhagia. Filaments are considered astringent and cooling used in burning sensation of the body, bleeding and piles. Anthers are cooling, aphrodisiac, uterine sedative and astringent and are used in diarrhoea, thirst, bleeding piles, inflammations, poisoning, ulcers and sores of the mouth. | ||||

Pharmacological effect | Alkaloid nupharine in 8 mg/kg dose to a dog causes lasting stimulation of the respiration; impaired respiration is restored and stimulate. The alkaloid, nelumbine, which acts as a cardiac poison, has been isolated from petioles, pedicel and seed embryo. In bleeding piles, the filaments of the lotus are given with honey and fresh butter or with sugar. | ||||
