Distribution areaOccurs in stagnant water throughout the warm regions from Persia to Australia. It is common in tanks in the dry zone in Ceylon.
Common usesStem is astringent, cooling, diuretic and anthelmintic and is useful in strangury, vomiting, leprosy, skin diseases, helminthiasis and nervous exhaustion.
Therapeutic usesRaktapitta (bleeding disorders), Mutrakrcchra (urinary disorders), Raktavanti (haematemesis/hematemesis).
Pharmacological effectSaline extracts of stem, leaves and flowers possess bacteriostatic action against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.
