Distribution areaAn aromatic herb cultivated throughout India. It is also found in Mediterranean region and Arabia.
DescriptionThe seeds are also called Tukhme Sherbati. It is a highly fragrant plant.
Function and propertiesHead and heart, Swellings, Excretion.

Exhilarant, cardiotonic, stomachic, diuretic and emmenagogue. Seeds mucilaginous, demulcent and resolvent of inflammations.
Specific actionsExhilarant (demulcent), cardiac and stomach tonic.

Common usesHead and heart: Sweet basil is considered as exhilarant and cardiotonic. The seeds are soaked in water and mixed with other syrups and then administered. It is useful in the weakness of the heart and palpitation. Its leaves on smelling remove fainting fit.

Swellings: Its leaves after grinding are used as plaster for resolving inflammations.

Excretion: The decoction of its leaves acts as diuretic and emmenagogue. Seeds are also given in urinary disorders, such as gonorrhoea/gonorrhea, scanty and scalting urine etc.
Side effectIt reduces vision of the eyes on prolong or frequent use.
