DescriptionIt is similar with cinnamon but is thicker than it. Its odour and taste are also like cinnamon.
Function and propertiesFood, Head and heart, Chest, Alimentary organs, Excretion.

Aromatic, carminative, astringent, stimulant, strength giving to vital organs like brain, head and liver, diuretic and emmenagogue and expectorant.
Specific actionsTonic to stomach and liver.

Common usesFood: It is used extensively as a spice in the preparation of foods for getting benefit of its fragrance. It is used in tooth powders to strengthen the gums.

Head and heart: It exerts exhilarant action on heart and brain.

Chest: On respiratory organs exerts stimulating effects and thus brings expectoration. To relieve cough and asthma bark is bruised in honey and given in small doses as linctus. It is given alone or with other suitable drugs in coryza and catarrh.

Alimentary organs: It is tonic to stomach and liver. It tonifies stomach and liver and causes astringency in intestines. It is incorporated in such prescriptions which are useful in dysentery.

Excretion: It is also aphrodisiac and emmenagogue. To bring menses, bark decoction is given under proper doses.
Side effectIt is harmful for the individuals who are suffering from kidney ailments. Cassia bark is taken orally in case of snake poisoning.

Chinese cassia (Arabic - Qirfah) is obtained from Cinnamomum cassia Blume, imported into India, via Singapore and Hong Kong. Sometimes used as substitutes. The Arab and Indian Unani physicians have described this drug.
