Distribution areaOccurs throughout tropical India, Ceylon, Malaya, China, Java and Philippine Islands. It is very common in Ceylon in the forests of the dry zone.
Common usesBark is sweet, cold, germicidal, anthelmintic, emetic, febrifuge and purgative. It is used in the treatment of fever, heart diseases, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, malarial affections, haemetemesis/hemetemesis, dyspepsia, colic, constipation, ulcers, ringworm, boils, pustules, leprosy, strangury, leucoderma, eczema, ascitis, diabetes, jaundice, syphilis, dysuria, arthritis and chronic rheumatism. It promotes digestion and appetite.

Stem bark is reported to be eaten raw for stomach ache.
Pharmacological effectBark possesses tonic and anti dysenteric properties. The extract of stem bark showed high interferon like antiviral activity against Ranikhet disease virus and Vaccinia Virus (VV).
