Distribution area | Occurs throughout tropical India, Ceylon, Malaya, China, Java and Philippine Islands. It is very common in Ceylon in the forests of the dry zone. | |||||
Common uses | Bark is sweet, cold, germicidal, anthelmintic, emetic, febrifuge and purgative. It is used in the treatment of fever, heart diseases, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, malarial affections, haemetemesis/hemetemesis, dyspepsia, colic, constipation, ulcers, ringworm, boils, pustules, leprosy, strangury, leucoderma, eczema, ascitis, diabetes, jaundice, syphilis, dysuria, arthritis and chronic rheumatism. It promotes digestion and appetite. Stem bark is reported to be eaten raw for stomach ache. | |||||
Pharmacological effect | Bark possesses tonic and anti dysenteric properties. The extract of stem bark showed high interferon like antiviral activity against Ranikhet disease virus and Vaccinia Virus (VV). | |||||
