Distribution areaIt is mostly found in Khurasan and Transoxiana, it is obtained from a plant called Haj (Alhagi pseudalhagi). The larger kind of this species is scarce in India, but abundantly found in Egypt, Arab and Khurasan.
DescriptionThe drug consists of congealed exudes itself from the plant of Haj, in the form of round granules of brownish colour. The exudation has soft structure. Its taste is sweetish. This is the fluid or moisture which is congealed after oozing from the plants of Camel's Thorn. According to Avicenna (Ibn Sina) the best kind of Turanjabin is one which is fresh and white.

The manna is a laxative, aperient, a good cleansing agent, purgative for excess bile (and biliousness), expectorant of phlegm, aphrodisiac, tonic and fattening.

Frequency in useVery common.
Common usesThe manna has been referred as safe and best suited for sensitive individuals (temperamentally) and for children who have weak and lean posture. It is administered as safe laxative.

Chest: It cures cough and relieves the (congested) chest. It acts as expectorant of phlegm and antibilious.

Excretion: It possesses the property to gently purge out yellow bile.

Body tonic: Used in tonic preparations administered for the purpose of increasing weight and as aphrodisiac.

As corrective added with other laxatives. Also used in thoracic complaints like hoarseness, cough, bronchitis etc.
Side effectIt is harmful for those individuals who have hot temperament and small pox.

Traditional conceptTemperamentIt is moderate in temperament (Avicenna).
According to Ibn al-Baytar it is hot and moist in the first degree.
Balanced temperament inclined towards hotness (Kabiruddin).
Drug effectThe manna is aperient and aphrodisiac. Not suitable for individuals who have small pox.
Dosage24 to 48 gm. Avicenna (Ibn Sina) has also mentioned the dose of Turanjabin as 45 to 90 gm.
SubstituteShir khisht (Fraxinus ornus Linn.), exudation and sugar (red).

Manna is also obtained by incision from the stem or exudes itself from these plants.
