Distribution area | A perennial climbing herb with long cylindrical roots. It is found in Nilgiris and throughout the hilly districts in India. It is also found in North & West Frontier Provinces in Pakistan. | |||||
Description | The roots are hard, woody and reddish-brown in colour. The taste is bitter. | |||||
Function and properties | Cosmetics, Joints, Food, Skin, Excretion. Deobstruent, alexipharmic, powerful emmenagogue, astringent, antipyretic, diuretic, analgesic, anodyne, caustic, alterative and antidysenteric. | |||||

Common uses | Cosmetics: It cures ringworm. It is applied with vinegar to cure pityriasis alba. It also clears the skin and removes all kinds of spots and stains. Joints: When taken with water mead it proves to be useful in sciatica, paralysis with defect of tough sensation. When 3.5gm of dyers madder is taken with 7gm of Himalayan rhubarb, it becomes useful for treating cases of injury and fall. Also effective in rheumatism and arthritis. Food: Its fruit is taken together with oxymel in splenitis. It cleanses the liver and spleen and removes their obstructions. This is its main characteristic. Skin: Being detergent and esteemed caustic bruised and mixed in vinegar and applied on freckles, ringworm, vitiligo and variable skin spots. Excretion: It is highly diuretic and sometimes causes haematuria/hematuria. Its use as a pessary may cause excessive menses and expel the foetus. It is an effective deobstruent prescribed in obstructions of the urinary passages and amenorrhoea/amenorrhea. On the other hand it hastens the inception of menstruation and is useful in treatment of overdue menses also. | |||||
Side effect | Extra large doses can powerfully affect the nervous system and may cause temporary delirium. Large doses or prolong use may cause haematuria/hematuria. Whole plant is regarded as alexipharmic and applied locally to procure this effect following attack of poisonous insects. | |||||

Related drugs | The plant material, which is marketed from Sikkim and northeastern hills consists of the root of Rubia sikkimensis Kurz. It has a rough and fluted appearance, differs from the round smooth roots of R. cordifolia. | |||||
